Apply for a 10-week residency

October 10th - December 16th, 2022 in Berlin, Germany
Deadline to apply September 15th

This fall, we are bringing together 12 creative, unconventional, curious people to pursue the things that make them come alive.

You should apply if:

  • You know what you want to work on for 10 weeks—maybe a project or a burning curiosity. Something that’s meaningful to your life’s work
  • You support our principles of gathering and yearn to surround yourself with others who do too
  • You want community: you have gifts to share, the capacity to receive, and the prospect of serendipitous collaboration excites you!
  • You can be present: You can commit to living in Berlin for the full residency, coming to Medley most days of the week, and devoting time to other residents.

Ready to come play together? Apply here.

FAQs

What will the schedule look like?

Week 1: The Medley team will welcome residents to the community through workshops, activities, and excursions. Each resident will be matched with 2-3 other residents to form a crew.

Weeks 2-9: The schedule is largely self-directed.

Residents will spend their time at Medley flowing between work and play, both in parallel and together. The Medley team will lead and/or suggest some structures and rhythms that support creativity and community feel (e.g. crew check-ins, a weekly progress meeting) but it will ultimately be up to residents to design the schedule and use the space as a canvas. For example, in past gatherings, attendees have organized: literary salons, a breathwork workshop, jam sessions, and talks with themes such as: money without taboos; online to offline community building; and devotion in work.

Week 10: Residents will focus on sharing their work through artifacts (e.g. video reflections, open source documentation, essays). There will be options to share semi-publicly, with other residents and the Medley team, and publicly, via a showcase event.

What kind of project can I work on?

You can work on almost anything: a novel, software, immersive art, choreography, a business idea, a wiki for your community. The important thing is that it lights you up and you’re ready to share your creative journey with others.

Can I switch projects halfway through?

You bet. If inspiration strikes, we’ll support you. If multiple residents decide to pursue a collective work, we’ll support that too.

Will I get a fixed desk / monitor / darkroom?

We'll balance the individual preferences and needs of the 12 residents. For residency 1, most residents will be comfortable with shared desks or open space and laptops.

But don't hesitate to apply if you need something more fixed/private. E.g. for a videography project, we can set up a fixed desk with large monitor for you. For dance/choreography, we can block out some time in the calendar for regular practice.
If you're a visual artist who needs a dedicated private 3x3m studio, 24/7, then this residency won't be ideal.

How much will it cost?

Residencies are completely free! You will be responsible for your own accommodation. We will also offer financial aid on a case-by-case basis. Our priority is getting the right people here! Please don't let money stop you from applying.

Can I apply if I have a part-time job / a kid / other commitment?

We don’t have any hard rules here, but if you keep missing out on the impromptu programming organized by your fellow residents, you will be sad and they will be sad and we will all be sad! We suggest you have at least 20 hours per week to devote to the residency AND have the agency to schedule your other commitments flexibly.

I am an introvert/pretty independent. Is this for me?

We aim to create a community experience that is energizing for everyone. To that end, we prioritize small group activities over large ones, and encourage you to take ample alone time to recharge.

Can I nominate someone who would be perfect for this?

Please do! Just fill out the nomination form.

I can’t make these dates. Will there be another cohort?

We can’t say for sure, but if our first residency goes well, we hope to offer more in the future.

Do you provide housing?

You should assume having to find your own accommodation. But we are hoping to help, here, if we can — we're pursuing partnerships with nearby housing providers. We'll update this site with more information as it becomes available.

Do I need a visa?

Many countries allow you to travel to the Germany / the Schengen Zone for 90 days without a special visa. Check your own situation here.

Can I bring my family?

We seek to be as inclusive as possible. Please tell us what you need during the interview process, and we’ll see what we can accommodate.

How are you funding this?

We are a registered nonprofit, with the goal of making space for collective thriving. We keep the lights on with donations and grants. If you would like to help us keep our residencies free, donate to our GoFundMe (coming soon) or contact us.

This sounds really interesting, but…

If you read this page and thought “Oh HELL YEAH”, please apply! We can figure out all the other details together.
